Sky Box

Skybox is in the Sunsphere. When I was there, they didn’t serve any food. So, they had an open snack bar. They did tell me they were thinking about serving appetizers. I have not gone back since, so you will figure that out when you get there.

ノックスビル名所、サンスフィアーの中にあるバー、スカイボックス。私が行った時は食べ物を出していなく飲み物のみ。軽いおつまみは出されていて、ただで食べられる。今は食べ物も出しているかも…　行って確かめてください。

I was just curious how the view is going to be… well, this is how it looks.

まあそんなに言うほどでもない。

The prices of drinks are about the same as Downtown. A little pricy. Since the space is very limited, don’t bring a big group there. You can’t get too private, so not so good for romantic date… only my opinion though. You also have to walk to get there… no parking near by.

飲み物はダウンタウンと同じ値段。あまりスペースがないのでグループで行くのはやめた方が良いでしょう。ちょっときゅうくつなのでロマンティックなデートは無理気味。パーキングが近くにないのも辛い。

Razzleberry

Razzleberry is in Jackson Square in Oak Ridge. It is an Ice-cream store, but they make sausages on the side and do lunch. The owner is supposed to be from Germany but not for sure. I have had their BBQ stuff and of course ice cream. THEY ARE AWESOME!

オークリッジのジャクソンスクエアーにあるラズルベリーはアイスクリーム屋さん。でもドイツ人の経営者はソーセージなども売っていて、ランチもやってるらしい。食べ物もアイスも食べたことがあるが、日本人好みのお味。超美味しい!

They go to festivals, too. That is what they drive. So CUTE!
これはアイスを外に売りに行くときの車。かわいい!

The inside is cute too! If I remember correctly, I think, if you buy lunch there, you can get one scoop of ice cream free… but it’s been long time since I went there, so they might have changed.

中もかわいい!　このごろ寄ってないので変わっているかも知れないけど、ランチを頼むと1スクープのアイスがついて来るはず。

The flavors are sometimes unusual too. I had lavender at lavender festival (June) and it was amazingly good.

フレーバーもいろいろでラベンダーフェスティバルの時出したラベンダーアイスは最高だった。

This is worth a trip. Please stop by when you go to Oak Ridge. They have different festivals. Check my other blog for more info :)

オオクリッジはちょっと遠いかも知れないけどドライブする価値があるぐらい美味しいので近くに来られる時は是非お試しを!

Chez Guevara

I love eating at Chez Guevara. Some people still call it La pez or something like that. My favorites are the two kind of salsa that they serve, pitcher of margarita, and modern Mexican food. Yes, they are not traditional so much. Mexican and western mixed together.

チェズグエヴァラ(読み方?) はトイザラスと大きい本屋のあるショッピングセンターの角にある。昔の名前ラ・パズと言う人もまだ多い。ここの好物は2種類のサルサ、ピッチャーで頼めるマルガリータ、そして今向きのメキシカンフード。普通のメキシカンとはちょっと違うのが好き。

I love the inside too. Very festive.
店の中のデコレーションも好き。

It seems always crowded. Just prepare to wait when you go.

いつも込んでいるので待つのを覚悟して言ったほうが良いでしょう。

Big Fatty's

The name sounds unattractive to me somehow. It is on Kingston Pike in Bearden area.

ビッグファティーとはあんまり期待できない様な名前のレストラン。キングストンパイクのビアデンエリアにあります



From the menu, I can tell it is country/comfort food. Price range is $10 to $20? Not too bad.

メニューを見るとカントリータイプの料理。＄10から＄20ぐらい。まあまあかなぁ。

I brought wine, and it was OK. They sell beer though. Very casual setting and not many waiters. I had to wait a while. I wanted to order blue plate special, but it was sold out. It must be good… So, I had jerk chicken, red bean and rice, and spinach maria. My friend ordered pork tenderloin, potato, and okra.

ワインの持ち込みはOK。ビールは売っている。カジュアルでウェイターがなかなか来ない。　日替わりのブタのローストを食べたかったのだが、売り切れ。人気なのだろう。仕方がないので私はジャークチキン、赤い豆の入ったご飯とほうれん草の入ったクリーミーなスピニッチマリアを、友達はブタのテンダーロイン、ポテトのグラタンとオクラ揚げを頼んだ。

Since I was starving, I got corn bread which comes with meal first. It was OK. Not as good as my favorite; VG’s.

お腹が空いていたので着いてくるコーンブレッドを早速先に持ってきてもらった。私の大好物のVG’sのコーンブレッドまでは美味しくない。



Here they come! The Volume was Huge! It worth 2 meals! めちゃ多い。

They were delicious. I will come back again if I am around this area, and I am mood for country cooking.

美味しかったことは美味しかったけど、感動的ではない。まあこの辺に来たらまた立ち寄ろうかなというぐらい。でもカントリーな食べ物を食べたい人は行ったらいいかも。

Mexican Market and Restaurant on Kingston Pike

Another Mexican… by now, you must be able to guess that I love Mexican food. Well, this is another favorite store of mine. It is a Mexican grocery store, but serves food inside. It is in Bearden/Sequoia area where Panera shopping center is, which is across from Mayo, Kroger and Starbucks. Before, they didn’t have menus or waiters who speak English. But, when I went recently, they changed it like a real restaurant with menu and the waiters who speak English! You still have to recognize some basic Spanish words to order food because the menu is in Spanish only.

またまたメキシカン。好物な物で…すみません。　
ここはビアデン/セコイアの辺り。パネラのショッピングセンターの近所にあるメキシカンスーパーの中にあります。ちょっと前までメニューもないようなお店だったのに今回行ったらこましになっていてびっくり！　お店の人もちょっと英語が上手になっていた。でもメニューは全部スペイン語なのでやはりちょっとは知っておかないとだめかも。



I had my favorite first. Tostadas de camaron. Muy bien! It is so simple. Shrimp, cilantro, and onions are chopped and mixed with salts and lemon/lime juice. They only did this on Fridays, but now I think they do everyday.

私の1番好物、えびの1品。シンプルで簡単に作れるけどやっぱりここのが1番。えび、たまねぎ、シラントロをきざんでレモン汁かライム汁と塩であわせ、トスタダスというかりかりのものに載せてアボガドと食べる。昔は金曜日だけのメニューだったのだけど(宗教上金曜日はお肉は食べないので)、今はいつでも頼めるようだ。



Then, I tried their popular dish. Sopes. I have seen others eat so many times, but this was my first time. It was muy bien tambien! Looks like the picture. You have to chose the meat goes with this. If you get lucky, the waitress can tell you which is what meat… good luck though. If I am not mistaken, pastor is beef cheek. Lengua is tongue. Carnitas is pork… right?!?!

で、今回はよくこのお店で見るソパスに挑戦。これもおいしかった。お肉を選ぶのだけど、スペイン語なので難しいかも。牛肉のほお肉、舌や、ブタの皮などあるので、気を付けて頼んでください。





I was surprised with the price of the beer!!! $3.5 per bottle! It was way cheaper before, but I bet this was gringo price. Over all, they increased the price, but still worth going!

ビールは冷蔵庫から取るんだけど高くなっていてびっくり!　多分、外国人料金を取られているんだと思う。それでもやっぱりお買い得かな。





If you are non-Hispanic, they will stare at you for a while, but keep smiling. They are nice person. Also, on the way out, check out their groceries. They are awesome! Try some plantain chips! Also, there is a Mexican bakery in the same area. You should try their teres leche. Mmmmmmm!!!

外国人が行くと(アメリカ人も含めて)じっと見詰められるけど気にしないように。帰りはお店でプランテイン(硬いバナナ)のチップスを買ってみてください。2,３軒隣にはメキシカンのベーカリーもあります。まあまあだけど安いので試して見てください。

Rankin Restaurant

My 80 years old friend was the one who told me to try this restaurant about a couple of years ago. Since then, I go there every time I have early appointment @ St. Mary’s. Now, some of them even recognize me as a Japanese who takes pictures of food… just kidding. But that’s how they got to know me there.

80歳のアメリカ人の友達が2,3年前に教えてくれたお店です。最初に行って以来近所に行く機会があれば必ず寄るおいしいビスケットが食べれるカントリーな食堂。今では食べ物の写真を撮る変な日本人としてウェイターの人も覚えていてくれている。

Their biscuits are the BEST in town! Also, the best gravy in town! They bake the biscuits every morning fresh! You can see them baking in the kitchen too

ここのビスケットが超おいしい。いろいろ食べた中でここのが私にとって１番。ビスケットの上に乗っけて食べる田舎/テネシー独特の食べ物グレービーもここのが1番!　ビスケットは毎朝焼かれていて、キッチンで休みなくいつも焼いているのが見れる

I have been to different country cooking places, but this is one of the best country breakfast places that I proudly suggest. I have not tried lunch yet, but the way they cook food, I am sure lunch is good too. Definitely, worth trying!

カントリー系の食べ物はいろいろな所で試したけれどここの朝食が私にとっては1番!　ランチはまだ試してないけど、期待できるかも?　お試しを!

Hong Kong House - Chinese

Oh my gosh… December 2008 and January 2009 just flew by…

年末年始はあっと言う間に過ぎてしまいました。
明けましておめでとうございます。今年も飽きらめずどうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

For the first blog of this year, I have to tell you about my new favorite Chinese restaurant in Knoxville. Actually, the restaurant has been there for a long time and they have been serving very nice meals. I don’t know the detail but now the restaurant is co owned by this Chinese chef, who used to cook for Chinese embassy, who is a master of Szechwan cuisine. The article was on the news-sentinel. Everyone was talking about it, so I had to check it out as usual.

今年の一番目のブログは中華料理のお店です。
長い間オープンしているのですがオーナーが代わったらしくまたそのオーナーが中国の領事館などで料理するぐらいの大物と新聞に載っていたので早速レストラン調査をしにいってきました。

The restaurant is called Hong Kong House and located in a shopping center where TJ Maxx, O’ Charlie’s, and Blockbuster are in Knoxville.

レストランの名前は”香港ハウス”　TJマックスやオーチャーリーズのあるショッピングセンターに入っています。

First time I went, I was with another friend. We learned quickly that we need to have more than 2 people to really enjoy the food (serving size was big). So, on the Chinese New Year, I recruited more people to celebrate the new year and to try more delicious food there.

初めて行った時は私の友達と2人だけで量がすごく多く他に食べたかった物が食べられなかったので2回目、中国の新正月のときは合計5人でお祝いと兼ねて行って来ました。

Their menu is BIG. They have more than 100 items to choose from. Good thing I had a Canadian friend who lived in China. We had very interesting authentic dishes.

メニューはすごく多くって、全部で軽く100種類以上。カナダ人のブロンドの友達が中国語ぺらぺらだったのでオーナーらしき人と相談してもらってお勧めの料理を出してもらうことにしました。

Appetizer 1: Fish with Cilantro rolls – SO interesting combination. Delicious!
最初はお魚とシラントロの春巻き。この取り合わせは意外でとってもおいしかった!　超お勧めの一品



Appetizer 2: pork dumpling – they can do fried or steamed. The sauce is to die for.
餃子は他のアメリカ人のために。日本人としては皮が厚すぎるけどこれが本物なのだろう。ソースはにんにくが効いていておいしい！

Noodle soup that is popular in Japan. It’s not on the menu, but it was the special of the day.
坦々麺は普通。久しぶりにと思って食べたけど日本版の坦々麺のほうが好き

Shredded pork with eggplant
ブタとなすのピリカラ風。ありがちだけどおいしかった!

Fried rice
焼き飯　(子供用に。でもおいしかった)



Braised beef with tomato in hot pot
牛肉とトマトの鉄なべ。(筋とかも入っている)　おいしい!

Dried fried eggplant – spicy eggplant without any sauce. Simple and delish!
なすの空焼き？　これがまたシンプルでおいしい!

Special dish - whole fish with sweet (?) sauce – was very good!
メインはお魚の丸上げ甘酢ソースがけ。鯛だという噂。いけてた。



Suggestions: Take at least 4 people who are ok to eat skin, tendons and ligaments. Order different kinds of dishes and share. Remember the portion is big. Also, Szechwan food is usually spicy. They do have delicious appetizers too (as you saw in the picture). You could just get those and order beer. OH! That reminds me! You can bring your own wine there! I didn’t ask, but I saw someone with wine. There must be a cork fee, so if you must know, call them 670-8819 to find out.

量が多いので4人以上で行って分け合うことをお勧めします。お肉などはぶつ切りで筋なども平気で入っているので慣れていないアメリカ人を連れて行くときはメニューの内容を確認したほうが良いでしょう。おつまみ系もたくさんあるので飲みに行くだけも楽しいかも。ワインを持ってきていた人がいたので多分持ち込みもできるのだと思うのですが、聞くのを忘れたのでそれは670-8819までお問い合わせを。
